To host a Friendsgiving, pick a date, send one sign-up link with the invitation, roast the turkey yourself and let friends claim everything else. Then work backwards from the day. You need about four weeks, a sign-up list with quantities, a thermometer and enough chairs.
You need about four weeks, a sign-up list with quantities, a thermometer and enough chairs. The plan below is written for any date. The table shows it for Saturday, November 21, 2026.
Step 2 takes five minutes. One link for the invitation. Guests tap an item and type a name. Free, with no account and no app.

Pick a weekend date before Thanksgiving, or the weekend after. Thanksgiving 2026 is Thursday, November 26, so the Saturday before is November 21 and the Saturday after is November 28.
Dictionary.com defines Friendsgiving as a gathering of friends to celebrate Thanksgiving with a feast, near or on Thanksgiving Day, in contrast to the traditional family celebrations. That leaves the exact date up to you. Some friends will have family plans on the Thursday itself, which is why a nearby weekend is the easy choice.
Choose the date and a headcount. The headcount sets everything else: how many chairs, how much turkey, how many dishes.
Check the count against your space. If you have more guests than seats, borrow chairs now and put them on the list. For a table of lists by group size, see who brings what.
Send one message with the date, the address and one link to the sign-up. Do not send them separately, because the people who reply to the invitation first are the ones who would have taken the good slots.
Create the list with the event name and items. Give every item a quantity, enter your name and email, and take the guest link and the admin link the page sends you. Keep the admin link. Claim the turkey under your own name first.
The Friendsgiving sign-up sheet guide shows a made-up example list with quantities.
Check the list a week out. Fill empty slots by asking friends directly. The page does not send reminders, so a message to the group is your reminder.
Order or buy the turkey. Use 1 pound of whole turkey per person, or 1.5 pounds if you want leftovers (USDA and university extension numbers). A frozen turkey takes days to thaw in the refrigerator, so check the USDA thawing chart in Let's Talk Turkey and start early.
The countdown for Saturday, November 21, 2026. Shift every date if yours differs.
| When | Date | What to do |
|---|---|---|
| 4 weeks out | Saturday, October 24 | Pick the date, count heads, list the chairs you need |
| 3 weeks out | Saturday, October 31 | Send the invitation with the sign-up link |
| 2 weeks out | Saturday, November 7 | Check the list, ask friends to fill empty slots, buy the turkey |
| 1 week out | Saturday, November 14 | Confirm headcount, plan seating, start thawing if frozen |
| 3 days out | Wednesday, November 18 | Message the group about the final list and arrival time |
| Day before | Friday, November 20 | Shop for your own dishes, clear the fridge, set the table |
| The day | Saturday, November 21 | Roast, rest, set out the food, eat within the safe window |
Starting late? Skip to the row you are in. The invitation, the sign-up link and the turkey are the three steps that cannot slip.
Count seats before you count dishes. One chair per guest, plus a surface for the food that is not the table people eat from. A side table or a counter works.
Put gear on the sign-up list too: extra chairs, folding tables, serving spoons, a second set of plates. A seat is as easy to run short of as a pie.
Open the sign-up page and check it once. If a friend has dropped out, remove their sign-up and message the group so that the slot is covered before the afternoon.
Then work in this order: turkey in, table set, chairs counted, drinks chilled, a clear spot for dishes to land. Guests arriving with a hot dish need somewhere to put it down at once, so clear a counter.
Illinois Extension says the safest margin is 2 hours from the time you take the bird out of the oven. USDA guidance says perishable food should not sit out more than 2 hours, or 1 hour if it is above 90 degrees F. A whole turkey is safe at a minimum internal temperature of 165 degrees F, so use a food thermometer.
After dinner, put leftovers in the refrigerator within 2 hours. Leftover turkey keeps 3 to 4 days in the refrigerator, according to Illinois and Minnesota Extension. Ask a few friends to bring containers, and put "containers" on the list as an item.
Step 2 takes five minutes. One link for the invitation. Guests tap an item and type a name. Free, with no account and no app.
Four weeks is comfortable. Choose the date and headcount first, send the invitation and sign-up link about three weeks out, and confirm everything a week before. Junto takes about five minutes to set up. Create the page before you send the invitation so the link goes in the first message.
The host usually roasts the turkey, and friends bring everything else. That keeps your oven for one job. Junto lets you put the turkey on the list under your own name first, so no one else buys one. Write your own claim, then open the remaining slots to guests.
Plan 1 pound of whole turkey per person, or 1.5 pounds per person if you want plenty of leftovers. That is the USDA number and the University of Illinois leftover figure. Junto's page does not do that math for you. Multiply your headcount by the pounds, put the result on the list and buy the bird.
Open your admin link, remove their sign-up and post in the group chat that the slot is open again. You can also change a quantity or edit an item. Junto does not send reminders, so tell the group yourself. Do this at least a few days before the date.
